20 Years Later: How a YWCA Shelter Resident Returned as Keynote Speaker and Employer

10/19/2026

The Room Where Resilience Meets Grace

Standing at the podium at the DuPont Country Club during the 2026 YWCA Breakfast Celebration, looking out over 250 guests, a flood of memories washed over me. Two decades ago, in 2006, I sat in that very same room—not as an honored keynote speaker, corporate executive, or developer, but as a resident living at the YWCA Homelife Management Center shelter.

Life has a profound way of coming full circle when you allow your deepest valleys to cultivate your highest purpose.

As I was ushered to my table before stepping up to speak, I found myself seated directly beside Ginny, the former CEO of the YWCA—the very woman who had covered me with grace and recognized my potential during my darkest season twenty years ago. I turned to her and quietly asked, “Ginny… do you know who I am?” She looked at me with a soft smile and said, “You look familiar.”

Minutes later, as I stepped to the microphone, recap photos from my shelter days flashed across the big screen. I heard a sudden gasp from beside me as Ginny realized who was standing before her: “OH MY GOD, that’s Tanya Ennis!”

Stepping off that stage into her proud embrace reminded me why this journey matters so deeply. It wasn’t just a speech; it was a living testament to what happens when an organization sees a foundation where the rest of the world sees a dead end.

The Keynote Address: “The Setback Fueled My Faith”

Below is the message I shared with the leaders, supporters, and changemakers in that room—a message born out of a cold December day in 2005 and refined through nineteen years of intentional action.

“Good morning.

Twenty-one years ago, my life was written off by hardship. In the late 1990s, as a young African American woman and college dropout, I fought through systemic barriers to reach a six-figure salary in financial services by age thirty. But life can shift in an instant. On a cold December day in 2005, after losing my job and enduring a tumultuous divorce, my world collapsed. I wasn’t sitting in an executive boardroom—I was sitting on a bed at the YWCA Homelife Management Center shelter, holding my world in my hands, wondering if everything I had built was gone.

Where the rest of the world saw a dead end, the YWCA saw a foundation. They provided shelter, recognized my potential, and referred me to the YWCA Entrepreneurial Women Business Center with a blueprint for my future. While living there, I advocated for homeless families and earned my Wilmington University MBA in Homeland Security. Right in that deep valley, Tanya Associated Business Services (TABS) was born in 2007. In 2006, I dreamed of being in TIME Magazine. In 2007, the YWCA put me on the cover of their Annual Report—my TIME Magazine!—and named me a Woman of Resilience in 2008 at the Hotel Dupont. My setback didn’t break me—it ignited my faith.

Fast-forward nearly two decades: TABS is celebrating nineteen years of thriving business. As an entrepreneur, construction executive, TABS featured in USA Today, Politico, and Delaware Business Magazine, and contributor to the #1 bestseller Voices of the 21st Century with my chapter “Inequities and Opposition Couldn’t Stop Me,” my vision has come alive.

Today, I stand before you as a Licensed Professional Community Economic and Real Estate Developer building and renovating affordable housing. The woman who once needed shelter is now building homes, employing our community, and driving local growth. TABS designed in partnership with the Department of Labor—Delaware’s first approved apprenticeship program of its kind, putting underrepresented youth on track for high-paying construction careers earning a $134K salary before age twenty in construction.

Recently, an apprentice’s mother DM’d me. Years ago, she and I slept under the exact same YWCA shelter roof. Today, I am the employer giving her son his first life-changing career break.

That is the tangible, undeniable return on your investment. That is what happens when you fund a woman’s resurrection.

When you give to the YWCA this morning, you aren’t writing a check for charity—you are purchasing equity in human transformation and funding the next business owner, developer, and leader waiting inside that shelter right now. Every dollar breaks generational poverty and reshapes our city from the ground up. Let’s turn every setback into an unstoppable force for good. Thank you.”*

Generational Equity: The True Return on Investment

What made the 2026 Breakfast Celebration truly unforgettable wasn’t just reflecting on where I started—it was seeing where the next generation is going. Sitting in that room were several of my own apprentices.

One young man in particular stands as proof of what generational restoration looks like. His mother and I shared a space in the shelter twenty years ago before he was even born. Today, he is stepping into his power through our apprenticeship pathway, building a career, and securing his future. When he looked at me recently and said, “Ms. Tanya, you are stuck with me,” I couldn’t help but feel chills.

This is what happens when we shift our perspective from giving handouts to investing in human transformation. When you invest in a woman in crisis, you aren’t just saving a single life—you are rewriting the destiny of her children, her business partners, and her entire community for generations to come.

Moving Forward

To anyone currently sitting in their own valley: do not discard your trial. Your current setback is simply the foundation for the legacy you are about to build.
